Click-to-open details on any step

Make a clickable, interactive flow chart by adding pop-up info to any shape. Keep a high-level overview of the process or workflow, then click on a specific step to see its components. Perfect for demos, presentations, and interactive guides for colleagues or clients.

Try this demo chart (opens in new tab)

  • Click or hover to "bring up" info: click on a flowchart element and a popup opens with more information about the element. If you prefer hover, configure click-to-open or hover-to-open behavior per shape.

  • Attach details to shapes so you can make complex processes less confusing. Stay zoomed out and drill in only where needed.

  • Place and connect freely: put boxes wherever you want, connect them with arrows, and add content to show when clicked. For example, clicking on a box can open a bigger box with a little document inside (text, images, subflows, links).

  • Easily share your interactive document with a single no-sign-in link.

What is an interactive flowchart?

A flowchart shows a process, sequence, or system. An interactive flowchart adds on-demand detail: viewers see the big picture and click to open popups attached to specific shapes. Use it to document flowcharts or process steps without overwhelming the page — essentially a clickable process map where containers can be clicked to show a subsystem, small subflows, or supplemental notes. This is one application of Vexlio's interactive diagram capabilities, which work across any diagram type.

How does this make complex charts less confusing? We're used to designing flowcharts that fit on a flat page or open sequentially in a slide deck. This can force you to choose between too little and too much detail. When you create an interactive workflow, you keep the overview clear and reveal detail on demand, focusing on what matters now and diving deeper elsewhere when needed.

How does it work?

  1. Draw the high-level flow. Add boxes, connectors, labels, etc.
  2. Select any shape and click "Add popup." This opens the popup editor view, where you can draw any additional shapes, text, images, etc., that belong to the popup.
  3. Choose reveal behavior. You can make each popup appear when its trigger object is hovered over with the mouse or clicked.
  4. Share the result. Send a single link for anyone to explore your diagram in View Mode. Viewers don't need a Vexlio account or to sign in.

info Want collapse/expand behavior? Use click-to-open popups to collapse and expand nodes so viewers can focus on specific sections without leaving the main diagram.

Popular use cases for interactive flowcharts

SOPs and process documentation

Map each step of a standard operating procedure as an interactive workflow diagram. Attach checklists, safety notes, and links to supporting docs inside popups so the main chart stays scannable while every detail is one click away. Learn more about interactive process documentation.

User onboarding and training

Walk new hires through a clickable process map of your onboarding flow. Each step can reveal screenshots, examples, or helpful hints without cluttering the overview — learners explore at their own pace and revisit any stage instantly.

Event navigator

Publish a high-level chart of conference or event activities and let attendees click into room details, speaker bios, and session descriptions. One shareable link replaces a stack of PDFs, and updates propagate immediately.

Customer service call flows

Create interactive workflow scripts where agents click each decision point to reveal prompts, escalation criteria, and reference material. The top-level flow keeps calls moving while popups supply the depth agents need in the moment.

How is this different from other flowchart makers?

Most tools that call themselves "interactive" mean the author can drag and drop shapes on a canvas. That's just editing - every diagramming app does it. Vexlio is interactive for the viewer: people exploring the published diagram click shapes to reveal hidden detail, drill into sub-processes, and navigate at their own pace.

This distinction matters. A static export or a flat PDF forces you to cram every detail onto one page or split it across many. With Vexlio, you publish a single interactive workflow diagram where the top-level flow stays clean and every shape can hold as much depth as you need, accessible in one click, hidden until that moment.
